Hi everybody! How are you doing?
Well, the blog doesn’t seem to be very lively recently, perhaps it is due to the fact that both teachers and students are in “exams time” and there is little time left as this “high season” makes us be extremely busy. Busy and a little obsessed, because my comment this time is about grammar, English grammar (how appropriate!)
It’s about the Reported Speech.
Take the following sentence: “Let’s be more understanding”, she said. According to different grammars there could be as many as four possibilities.
a) She suggested being more understanding.
b) She suggested that we be more understanding. (Subjunctive).
c) She suggested that we should be more understanding.
d) She suggested that we were more understanding.
I think that all of them are correct but I would like to know if all of them are commonly used, specially option “b”. As my English is mainly “academic”, I couldn’t say if option “b” is something usual.
That’s all. Thank you in advanced for your time and devotion. And don’t worry there will be time to relax soon. Take care and enjoy life.

Hi anonymous...
I get your point when you say that 'for the fact of being...say,more academic', we sometimes lose perspective at the time of coming down to earth when colloquial-standard language is concerned ...
I really think that, all being perfectly right, no boubt, I wouldn't be using options b, or d, so much when talking. (Mind you, at a 'more informal' level I use -and have heard other natives use-- she suggested to be more..)
A different story would be when writing say, 'formally'. There, my tendency is to use, precisely, one of those...

And yes, school year is closing in... tuition time will up almost any minute now... and... welcome holidays!!!
Thank you indeed for your lovely comments and thoughts... Hope to 'see' you around... the blog.
Take care, and let's keep our chins up, shall we?!!!
Pilar

Thank you for your useful information, as usual. Who knows? It's a small world. See you.
